“KIPP is a place that helps you realize how smart you really are, if you believe.”
– Brianne W, 6th grade
History and Goals
In the summer of 2005, KIPP Tulsa contracted with the Tulsa Public School District to start and lead a tuition-free, open enrollment, college preparatory middle school. This new school of choice was designed to accommodate up to 360 students in grades 5th through 8th.
The KIPP Tulsa goal is simple, yet the responsibility is powerful: do whatever it takes to ensure that our students matriculate to college.
KIPP Tulsa students not only speak about college, they begin to recognize the depth of their own potential and exude a new found confidence. For KIPP Tulsa students, the question is no longer, “if I attend college,” rather “which college do I want to attend?”
KIPP: Knowledge Is Power Program
KIPP Tulsa is part of the widely-acclaimed Knowledge Is Power Program, which is a national network of tuition-free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools seeking to prepare students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. In alignment with state and national standards, as well as the KIPP national model, KIPP Tulsa takes an innovative, strategic approach to education with a rigorous college preparatory curriculum.
KIPP Tulsa builds a partnership among parents, students, and teachers that puts learning first. By providing outstanding educators, more time in school learning, and a strong culture of achievement, KIPP Tulsa helps transform educationally disadvantaged youth into scholars.
Vision Statement
To have all stakeholders working together toward the common goal of providing opportunities by which all students may reach their optimum level of achievement. We envision meeting the needs of students by addressing not only academic, but also emotional and social needs, in effort to prepare each student for college. Students will then carry behaviors and knowledge that will enable them to become productive citizens.
Mission Statement
To build character and prepare all students with the optimum academic and social skills necessary in order to succeed in high school, college and the competitive world beyond.
"You can tell that everyone, from the teachers to the staff, are there because they want to be there. That's what makes the biggest difference. That attitude filters down to the students and makes them excited about being a part. The students feel like they are special because they are KIPPsters."
– Shelly Watson, Former KIPP Tulsa Parent
