KIPP: Knowledge Is Power Program
KIPP Tulsa is part of the widely-acclaimed Knowledge Is Power Program, which is a national network of tuition-free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools seeking to prepare students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. In alignment with state and national standards, as well as the KIPP national model, KIPP Tulsa takes an innovative, strategic approach to education with a rigorous college preparatory curriculum.
KIPP Tulsa builds a partnership among parents, students, and teachers that puts learning first. By providing outstanding educators, more time in school learning, and a strong culture of achievement, KIPP Tulsa helps transform educationally disadvantaged youth into scholars.
KIPP Tulsa Mission Statement
To empower all students with the academic, character, and life skills necessary to succeed in high school, college, and the competitive world beyond.
KIPP Tulsa currently provides a college preparatory curriculum to approximately 320 students in 5th through 8th grade.
Enrollment Processes and Preferences
Although the main entry point into KIPP Tulsa is 5th grade, as KIPP Tulsa converts to a charter school for the 2012-2013 school year, the school is required to enroll all students through an application process. Per its charter agreement, KIPP Tulsa will give the following enrollment preferences:
- To students who meet all of the following requirements: (1) were enrolled in KIPP (when it was a contract school with TPS) during the 2011-2012 school year and at the time that enrollment applications were being accepted for the 2012-2013 school year; (2) reside within the geographical attendance zone boundaries of any TPS school site in which sixty percent (60%) or more of the children who reside therein qualify for the free or reduced school lunch program; and (3) who are eligible by age or grade to enroll in the Charter School’s educational program;
- To any student who resides within the geographic boundaries of the KIPP Academic Enterprise Zone, and is eligible by age or grade to enroll in the Charter School’s educational program. KIPP’s Academic Enterprise Zone is comprised of the geographical attendance zone boundaries served by the following TPS elementary school sites: Greeley Elementary School, Penn Elementary School, Hawthorne Elementary School, Anderson Elementary School, Cherokee Elementary School, Whitman Elementary School, Jackson Elementary School and Academy Central Elementary School;
- To any student that is the sister or brother of a student that has already been selected for enrollment.
If there are insufficient applications from the three groups of students defined above, KIPP may choose to enroll students who reside within the TPS District boundaries but outside the Academic Enterprise Zone. If KIPP chooses to accept applications from outside the Academic Enterprise Zone, KIPP will first consider applications from students who currently attend a TPS school listed on the needs improvement list and then from any student that lives within the TPS District boundaries.
Lottery Requirement
During the enrollment period, if KIPP Tulsa receives more applications for a particular grade than seats available for that grade from the three groups of students that will receive enrollment preference, KIPP Tulsa shall select students through a lottery process that does not discriminate against any student. The lottery will be used as a mechanism for selecting students that will result in an equal probability that any student will be selected. If there are remaining seats for any grade, KIPP Tulsa shall use the same lottery process to select the applicants who have applied for admission and currently attend a TPS school on the needs improvement list and then any student that has submitted an application and resides within TPS’ boundaries. Once all seats have been filled, remaining names will be selected through the lottery process and placed on the waiting list for each grade.
The student along with a Parent/Guardian must attend the lottery event (see below for specific dates).
How to Apply
To be considered for 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade enrollment for the 2012-2013 academic year, families must first download or pick-up from KIPP Tulsa's administrative office an application, then, complete and submit the application during the enrollment period as listed below. In order to be accepted, a completed application must be received by KIPP Tulsa by the applicable deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered during the lottery process. If fewer applications are received during the enrollment period than spaces available for a particular grade, applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis and no lottery will be held for that particular grade. When an application for admissions is received by KIPP, KIPP will provide the parent/guardian further information about the lottery process.

After enrollment selection is made, every student that has not taken the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment will be required to take the MAP assessment to determine the student’s reading and math grade levels and the appropriate grade placement for the student. Every student and family will meet with a KIPP staff person, one- on-one, to discuss, then, sign KIPP Tulsa’s Commitment To Excellence contract. The Commitment to Excellence outlines the expectations the school has for all students and families as they partner with the school to ensure that every student succeeds.
